Men's Fashion: Taking Flight
Posted on: September 24, 2011
Over the past few years men's fashion has really started to come into its own. Prior to 2005, men who were fashion conscious typically dressed similarly: typifying the "preppy" look that has been classic since at least the 1960s-polo shirts, khaki pants, argyle socks, etc. However, recently there have been celebrities, sports stars, and others that have embraced men's fashion and have really begun to set trends.
The new and various looks for men's fashion really began on college campuses across the country as young men began wearing tighter pants, and buying more expensive shirts. Stores like "Urban Outfitters" and "Lacoste" became very popular with upper-middle class men (and they still are). It was surprising to many that these young men were willing to pay hundreds of dollars for the right pair of jeans, or seek out specific loafers to match their new outfit.
Although this look is still popular, other trends have become fashionable as well. Designer clothes of all kinds have really taken off, and men are willing to part with more money for fitted pants, shirts, and other items. Men are also more conscious of accessories than ever before: sunglasses, handbags, expensive wallets, even jewelry sales are all up. Brands like "RayBan" eyewear have come back in style, and the amount of men who are wearing fake glasses to achieve a certain look (mimicking athletes or the popular but controversial music star Kanye West) is still high.
It seems that in these past five years men's fashion has gathered classic looks from the past century and combined them with other styles-from the "preppie" look to the urban "indie" look-these styles are not necessarily brand new, but being brought back with a modern twist. Although there are still some men who take these styles to the extreme, it is not uncommon to see these styles in more moderate settings. That being said, some of the more extreme styles that are popular amongst teenagers and the college crowd are worth noting. For example, as has been popular with girls during the past few years, some more daring teenage boys are starting to wear leggings with shorts. To achieve this look, the leggings are typically bright, and give the young man a spandex sport appearance, which is interesting and unexpected. Furthermore, mullets, and 90's flat tops with designs shaved into the sides often accompany such extreme looks.
Whatever your style, you can feel confident that in today's fashion world, there will be a place for you.
